4 WEEK PROJECTS 2012/2013

SKILLS: I need to look at different and more Interesting ways of creating images that complements my content and objectives. 

To achieve this is decided to work in a new way, using stick and ink. This allowed me only a small amount of control over the line and so I was free to focus on shape and tone. This was a really interesting new way of working and gave my work a fresher, easier, quality. Below are examples of how I practiced these SKILLS and made geared them toward my CONTENT and also my OBJECTIVES as stated previously in this blog

PROJECT 1: PEOPLE (in situations)
We met at Gloucester to go to a car-boot sale where we could draw people interacting , moving about and looking for things. I also tried to sketch people on the bus, at the cafe, anywhere I thought I could get a different perspective. These pictures were good practice at drawing on location and I should keep this up when I'm on a trip somewhere interesting.

FROM THIS WE WERE ASKED TO PURCHASE OBJECTS AT THE CAR-BOOT WHICH WE THEN USE IN OUR LIFE-DRAWING TO INSPIRE SCENES (THIS COULD THEN BE USED IN OUR FINAL OUTCOMES)

Below: Images drawn in life-drawing, scenes created using the objects we got from the car-boot. I wanted my final outcome to revolve around the records I got. So I asked for a scene with people sharing records. 

I was really pleased with these sketches, by changing my media use I ended up with a whole different STYLE and this is something I should pursue .  

FINAL OUTCOME BECAME MORE ABOUT BACKGROUND AND I LEARNED I SHOULD HAVE DRAWN THIS IN THE SAME MEDIA AND TECHNIQUE I DID THE CONCEPT AND DEVELOPMENT WORK BECAUSE IT LOST SOME OF ITS FLUIDITY HERE. I DO LIKE THE CHARACTER REPRESENTATION THOUGH AND THE COMPOSITION IS FUN AND FITTING FOR PURPOSE. 

AS AN IMAGE I AM PLEASED WITH THIS BUT I SEE ITS FLAWS. I DO NOT, HOWEVER, NEED TO KEEP WORKING ON THIS, I HAVE SAID WHAT I WANTED TO SAY IN TERMS OF CONTENT AND CHARACTER. 

.PROJECT 2: PLACE  FOR THIS PROJECT I DECIDED TO WORK SOME PEN INTO THE DRAWINGS BECAUSE WE WERE MOVING AROUND THE ROOM AND INK WAS IMPRACTICAL

Naughty Little Boggart!

Authorship story:  In life drawing our came up with an original story involving Boggart's (not the Harry Potter sort); Halloween, Sherlock Holmes type creatures emerging like genies out of pumpkins, angry farmers with guns and drunken adventures (which as students was the only thing we could quite empathise with). Once the narrative was documented we went away to concoct our own versions of the story. We put them together using all of our drawings done from life. How we put them together was up to us but it was important to me that I continued in the way I stated above even into the final piece, to see if this technique worked for the next stage of DEVELOPMENT.

Location Drawings: Drawn from car parks and shopping centers..looking at perspective, angles and shape.  

This was useful but unfortunately I got carried away with drawing character when I should have been looking at background and location: So the final outcomes I created did not really fit the brief. However, I did some other development work to rectify this. These sketches were useful but I should have varied the lines to get some feel for depth.

LIFE DRAWINGS FROM THE LIFE DRAWING CLASS (MODELS-OURSELVES)

Friends argue over a car which one of them has crashed 

They try to push the car off the road

They are in the woods where the Boggarts live and an angry farmer shoots one 

A girl finds the dead Boggart and is horrified, a genie promptly emerges from a nearby pumpkin (its Halloween)

 they find another Boggart on the roof of the car which the mechanic is fixing 

A pilot is flying overhead and seen by lots of characters 

The pilot sees a Boggart and man walks in on the Drunken students who made up and got drunk 

Thy are passed out from alcohol and turns out it was all a dream 

I am pleased with the diversity in sketches, some broken line/continuous/tone but I need to keep experimenting with other techniques and learn how to apply them. 

Below: How I transferred my sketches and DEVELOPMENT WORK into an OUTCOME with my own preferred CONTENT. 

CONTENT: Fairy-tale type story because it develops my own  personal ideas of content. FANTASY an element I have managed to continue whilst exploring that idea of modernism aligned with fantasy.

CONTINUED SKILL DEVELOPMENT WITH STICK AND INK ON THICK WATERCOLOUR PAPER (NON-TEXTURED)

1 CHARACTERS ARE ASLEEP AMONGST PUMPKINS-DRAWN FROM LIFE DRAWING COMPOSITIONS AND PUMPKIN PROP 
More white space needed above to make this image stand alone well, I could, if I take this image further rectify this digitally. Also the pumpkin on the left should be complete.  Otherwise I am pleased with the composition.

3: ANOTHER GENIE EMERGES FROM THE PUMPKIN 

Perspective is quite similar to the previous image but I was thinking they would be displayed as a double page. I do like, however, the three principle characters and how the composition puts them in the forefront-this is important  

FINAL IMAGE: Extreme perspective. Most pleased with this image because it answers the brief and helps me develop my ability to draw ANY perspective. This is a skill needed by any illustrator because a brief may call for all kinds of figurative work. For this reason life drawing is an invaluable tool, helping me to build up my own visual dictionary. I have learned I am able to do this and still keep in mind my own content and objectives and sometimes content can be adapted to suit objective. 

PROJECT 3: PEOPLE AND PLACE 

FOR THIS I WAS THINKING MORE ALONG THE LINES OF ATMOSPHERE AND OBJECTS AS OPPOSED TO LITERAL PLACE. PLACE CAN BE ANYTHING EVEN BLACK SPACE AS LONG AT IT SETS THE SCENE, RESPONDS TO A NARRATIVE AND TELLS A STORY. 

SKETCHES DONE AT 'HOLST MUSEUM' FOR PLACE AND SETTING. I CONCENTRATED ON OBJECTS THAT COULD HAVE A STORY INGRAINED IN THEM, OR WERE SUGGESTIVE OF THE PREVIOUS TENANTS. IT WAS A REALLY INSPIRING PLACE, ESPECIALLY IN TERMS OF THE ATMOSPHERE BECAUSE IT WAS PRESERVED AS IT WAS IN THE 1800'S. I WANTED TO CAPTURE THIS IS WHATEVER MY FINAL OUTCOMES WAS, BECAUSE HISTORY AND COSTUME IS A HUGE ELEMENT OF MY PERSONAL PRACTICE.

My favourite thing in there was the cradle, it had held 3 generations and was like new. It was full of History and atmosphere and immediately there were stories there I wanted to explore. 

A couple of extra sketches, just to build up my visual repertoire. The tea and patterns I thought could come in useful for the development. 

LIFE-DRAWING: WE SET UP SCENES TO HELP US DEVELOP AND CITE OUR FINAL OUTCOME 

A FINAL OUTCOME FOR 'PEOPLE AND PLACE' BASED ON LOCATION WORK AND LIFE-DRAWING SCENES.  

STORYBOARD EXPERIMENT: USING PEN AND INK, DRAWN WITHOUT PENCIL TO MAKE IT SPONTANEOUS. I TRIED TO DEPICT A KIND OF GHOST STORY BASED ON THE CRADLE. BUT A COMING OF AGE STORY-SO THE THINGS THIS CRADLE HAS SEEN THROUGHOUT THE GENERATIONS IS HAD HELD. 

TOO FINISHED REALLY, I LEFT OUT THE MIDDLE GROUND WORK BECAUSE I WAS SO KEEN ON THE IDEA I JUST WANTED TO GET IT DOWN. I DIDN'T IT TO BE THIS FINISHED BUT NEVERTHELESS I AM REALLY PLEASED WITH THE SEQUENCE, IT PERFECTLY SUMS UP MY PERSONAL PRACTICE, FAIRY-TALE FEEL, WITH A GOTHIC TWIST AND WELL CITED FOR REALISM.
